Even without center Andrew Bynum in the Lakers lineup, the Lakers went 9-1 over that stretch. Lamar Odom has step up his game and the Lakers have not missed a beat.
2 (3) Cavaliers 43-11
Cavs GM Danny Ferry pulled the perfect okey-doke before the trade deadline by not making any moves, yet appearing to be very busy. The reality is the Cavs have the third-highest payroll in the league at $91 million. By not making any moves, Danny Ferry made sure that the Cavaliers will be under the luxury tax come next season when Wally and Eric Snow combined $21 million come off the books. Next season the Cavaliers will have a $71 million payroll with big Z. and Ben Wallace in the final year of their contract paying them a combined $26 million. With the team in a comfortable financial situation and two expiring contracts totaling $26 million, Danny Ferry would have put himself in position to go after one or possibly two players via a trade.
3 (2) Celtics 45-12
The Boston Celtics will be without Kevin Garnett for 2 to 3 weeks, but may come out ahead at the end of the third week due to the difficult road schedule that the Cavaliers have. If Stephan Marbury gets added to the Celtics roster, they will find themselves in a much better position once Kevin returns.
4 (5) Magic 41-14
The trade for Alston was the best thing the Orlando Magic could have done. He clearly makes up for the loss of Nelson and should help keep the Magic in contention in solidifying the third seed in the East.
5 (4) Spurs 37-17
I for one was surprise that the San Antonio Spurs did not make a serious push for New Jersey's Vince Carter. The Nets were practically giving Carter away, but the Spurs opted to stand pat. I guess they figured they needed help for Tim Duncan rather than add another perimeter player at this time.
6 (6) Nuggets 37-19
The Denver Nuggets are only a game behind the San Antonio Spurs and could make a serious push to overtake the Spurs for the second seed in the West. The reality though, is I don't expect this to happen.
7 (7) Trail Blazers 35-20
Could Greg Oden be the reincarnation of Sam Bowie? The Portland Trail Blazers center has been doing a great job of making that impression. Let's not hope 12 years from now Kevin Durant and Greg Oden, are not being compared to Michael Jordan and Sam Bowie.
8 (8) Rockets 35-21
Having McGrady out for the rest of the season is perhaps the best thing that could happen to the Houston Rockets. Yao Ming will once again become the focal point of the offense and Ron Artest can return to averaging 20ppg. I also expect point guard Aaron Brooks and forward Scola to step up their games as well.
9 (11) Jazz 33-23
I will begin by giving my condolences to the Utah Jazz on the loss of their owner Larry Miller who recently passed away at the age of 64. One of the best owners in my opinion, Larry helped shape the Jazz into one of the NBA's most storied franchise. He will certainly be missed by many including Carlos Boozer, the Jazz star forward who recently returned back to the lineup.
10 (9) Mavericks 33-22
The Mavericks have remained steady even without Jason Terry in the lineup. It appears that they will be making the playoffs after all and was Terry returns, I see them moving up a notch.
11 (10) Hornets 32-22
The question I have is, how do you bring back a player who was traded but somehow the trade did not go through? This is the position the Hornets find themselves in with center Tyson Chandler returning back to the lineup. It's going to be very interesting how he's received by his teammates and coaches.
12 (12) Hawks 32-23
The Atlanta Hawks seem to have leveled out and seem very complacent with the fourth seed in the East. I guess they figured they are not going to move up so why put in extra effort. At least that's how things appear based on their body language.
13 (13) Suns 31-24
With the Mavericks steady play and now the return of the Jazz Carlos boozer, the Suns might find themselves out of the playoffs. With Amare out for the rest of the regular season due to an eye injury, I find it hard press that the Suns will make the playoff this season, in spite of the worst case scenario prediction by Shaquille O'Neal, that the Suns will go 22-9 to end the season.
14 (14) Heat 29-26
D-Wade is doing his best to help the Miami Heat maintain the eighth seed in the East and perhaps overtake the Atlanta Hawks for the fourth seed. The addition of Jermaine O'Neal should help the Heat stay consistent at worse, or move up to the fourth seed at best.
15 (16) Bucks 28-31
I don't see the Bucks letting up to the Bulls. I personally think ex Bulls coach Scott Skiles who now coaches the Bucks will do his absolute best to ensure that his new team beats out his old team for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
16 (17) Bulls 25-31
The Bulls may not have succeeded in trading for Amare, but getting Brad Miller and John Salmon from the Sacramento Kings was a pretty good consolation prize. I believe they have a better team than the Milwaukee Bucks, but I still don't see them overtaken the Bucks for the final playoff spot in the East.
17 (15) 76ers 27-27
For a minute the Sixers appeared to be looking past Elton Brand’s injury and rightfully so. I still believe they are better without him, but last week show that they do need an inside presence. Without that they are simply a decent playoff team in the Eastern Conference
18 (20) Knicks 23-32
If Stephan Marbury is released by the Knicks Eddie Curry will be the only high dollar Knicks left from the Isaiah Thomas era. The Knicks are moving full circle in anticipation of the 2010 Lebron James free agency class.
19 (18) Pistons 27-27
The Pistons Rip Hamilton was quoted saying, “I don’t mind coming off the bench if we are winning, but if we’re losing something has to give.” Well not in those exact words the something to that effect. All I can say is the entire Detroit Pistons team is in total chaos at this point.
20 (22) Pacers 24-34
The injury bug caught up with the Indiana Pacers who will be without all star forward Danny Granger for a few weeks. Ironically, they won back to back games without Granger in the lineup. Other than the Phoenix Suns, the Pacers are perhaps the best team that will not make the playoffs this season.
21 (19) Bobcats 22-34
Looking at the potential D.J Augustine, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Charlotte Bobcats move Raymond Felton during the off season. They try to do that by trading him to the Indiana Pacers, but the trade fell through.
22 (21) Nets 24-32
Not trading Vince Carter was the worst thing that could have happened to the New Jersey Nets. The Nets are clearly in rebuilding mold and Vince simply does not fit the bill anymore. I expect the Nets to make a major push to trade Vince during the off season.
23 (23) Raptors 22-36
In the long run the Raptors will benefit from trading for Shawn Marion. He fits their style and compliments all star Chris Bosh and Bagnani very well. I don’t see them making the playoff this season, but they will be a much improve team come next year.
24 (24) Warriors 20-36
I think the Warriors will love to move Jamal Crawford for a pure point guard, since they seem to have settled on letting Monte play the two guard position. I don’t think we will see Crawford in a Warriors uniform come next season.
25 (26) Timberwolves 18-37
With center Al Jefferson out for the rest of the regular season, I think the Wolves are now gearing and preparing for next year, when I expect them to be much improved. It will be a great accomplishment if they somehow can squeeze out 30 wins this year.
26 (25) Thunder 13-43
We don’t have to wait for 12 years, let’s just give it two more seasons for a simple debate. Does Kevin Durant-Greg Oden resemble Michael Jordan-Sam Bowie? In 20 months from now, I will be able to give my first assessment of this theory.
27 (27) Wizards 13-43
Gilbert Arenas told the Washington Post that he practicing at full contact. Please Gilbert, take the rest of the year off and come back stronger than ever. A return this season will only hurt the Wizards chances of winning the first pick in the draft this summer.
28 (28) Grizzlies 15-40
I cannot believe the Grizz sat on Gay when they could have probably gotten Amare. At least that’s according to Mike Stein of ESPN. I still have to look into the validity of that claim, but can you imagine pairing up Amare with Gasol in the middle, not to mention a top 5 draft pick to go along with O.J. Mayo next season. Well, there’s still this summer and if and when the Suns miss the playoff for the first time in years, I am sure Amare will be back on the block.
29 (30) Kings 12-45
Well the Kings got rid of a few salaries and saved some money, which is the only good thing you can say about SacTown right about now.
30 (29) Clippers 13-41
Baron Davis and Chris Kaman will be actively shop this off season I can assure you. Considering the expectations entering this season, the Clippers have had the most disappointing season of every nba team.

NBA WIZARD 2008-09 POWER RANKING: WEEK 16
RANK (LAST WK)REC.
1 (1) Lakers 43-10
Though a may be a small cushion, the Lakers were glad to have the best record at the all star break, especially with center Andrew Bynum out for the rest of the regular season. Then again, they may not need it because they were able to beat the Cavs and Celtics on the road.
2 (3) Celtics 44-11
The second half of the season will be a real test for the Celtics. I think their thin bench will eventually catch up with them unless they miraculously add a solid back up at the point guard position, i.e. Starbury.
3 (2) Cavaliers 40-11
The Cavs will be at full strength in a matter of a week, once starting guard Delonte West returns. Lebron is the key though. If he ends up leading the league in scoring after West returns, you can expect the Cavs to finish with the best record in the league. Don’t forget, the Lakers own the tie breaker against the Cavs and the Celts.
4 (4) Spurs 35-17
The Spurs are expected to make a serious push for Vince Carter, which will surely put them over the top, or at least put them in the same breath as the Lakers. If they stay pat, they will be no match for the Lakers. Ironically, I think the Spurs need to find help for Duncan, rather than adding another perimeter player.
5 (5) Magic 39-13
The Magic led the league in 3 point shooting because of two reasons. Dwight Howard’s dominance in the paint led to double teams, and Jameer Nelson penetration broke down their opponent’s defense. Without Nelson, teams are finding out that the best way to beat the Magic is to play Dwight straight up. If he dominates great, but no more open 3s for the Magic. I expect them to make serious push to address their point guard situation.
6 (6) Nuggets 36-17
Carmelo is the key to the Nuggets success. We already know what to expect from Chauncey. He will get everyone involve, but Carmelo needs to take them home. Carmelo’s all star snubbing should provide the motivation he needs to excel in that department.
7 (7) Trail Blazers 32-20
I know centers are hard to find, but after missing all of last season due to a knee injury and coming along very slowly this season, do you think the Blazers are having second thoughts about not picking Durant? Can you imagine his 26 ppg next to Brandon Roy? Well it probably wouldn’t be 26, but together they would be averaging 47 ppg right now for the Blazers.
8 (8) Rockets 33-21
Tracy McGrady’s season ending injury has ruinned any possibility of the Rockets contending for a title this year. The only way that happens, is if Artest and Yao averages 50 ppg, 16 + rpg, 4 spg, 4 bpg for the entire playoffs and I honestly don’t see that happening.
9 (11) Mavericks 31-21
Jason Terry is expected to return soon and we all know what to expect from Dirk. However, the key to the Mavericks success depends on Josh Howard. If he scores 20 points in any game and shoots a decent percentage, 45+, the Mavericks can beat any team. The reality though, is he does not consistently do that.
10 (9) Hornets 31-20
The Hornets will live and die by Chris Paul. The truth of the matter is even if you add David West to the mix I just don’t think the Hornets have enough to beat the Lakers or the Spurs in a 7 game series.
11 (10) Jazz 31-23
The Jazz are hopeful they will edge out either the Suns or the Mavericks for the final playoff spot and why not. Once Boozer returns and hopefully soon, they will be better than both of those teams.
12 (13) Hawks 31-22
The Hawks were the Cinderella team early on in the season until the Blazers took over the love. Injuries to Josh Smith early on and Al Horford recently, made people forget about the Hawks, which is good in a way. I think they put too much pressure on themselves early on, but now they are right where they want to be. If they get hot at the right time, things could be scary for any opponent in the playoffs.
13 (12) Suns 29-23
Shaq recent prediction has been the talk of the league. “I think we can go 26 and 5 best case, or 22 and 9 worse case.” Well even worse case should get the Suns in the playoff. They will finish 50-32. It will be hard press to see a 50 win team miss the playoffs.
14 (15) Heat 28-24
I Think Pat made a brilliant trade. J.O is a true center, or at least big enough to play the center position in the East. The implication of this is twofold. First, this allows rookie Michael Beasley to be put into the starting lineup, where he thrives better. Second, if it doesn’t work out with J.O., he will be in the final year of his contract next season paying him over $21 million, which will give the Heat a strong asset on the trade market.
15 (14) 76ers 27-25
The Sixers are right where they want to be considering the whole Elton Brand mishaps. They are better without him, yet they have him on the books at $75 million for 5 seasons including this one. Either way, they are seriously putting the heat on the Miami Heat for the 5th seed in the East.

I still expect the Bucks to make the playoffs though it will be difficult to do without Redd. I think their commitment to defense will eventually put them over the top.

The Bulls have been at the center of trade talks during the trading deadline for each of the past three seasons. Does this means John Paxson simply doesn’t know what he’s doing, or is it simply because they have a lot of tradeable assets?
18 (16) Pistons 27-35
Joe Dumars has made one mistake over the last six seasons in my opinion and that was drafting Darko ahead of Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. I expect him to let A.I and Rasheed Wallace contracts expire and rebuilt with the $35 million that will come off the books from the expiring contracts. In the main time he’s hoping they will get hot at the right time and upset a few contenders in the playoffs.
19 (21) Bobcats 21-32
Being in the East anything’s possible. If the Bucks and the Bulls go on a mini losing streak and the Bobcats can string up 4 in a row, they will be knocking on the 8th seed in the East.
20 (19) Knicks 22-31
The Knicks are an enigma in my mind. It seems like they want to stay competitive, but at times I think they would much rather have a high draft pick. I can’t get a read on them, but every time I check, they are in the middle of a trade rumor.
21 (18) Nets 24-30
I definitely expect the Nets to trade Vince Carter. I think economics have taken a toll on the Nets and I don’t think they are anticipating making the playoffs this season.
22 (23) Pacers 22-33
The rumor trade between the Pacers and the Bobcats never went down, which was a good thing for them. I still don’t think they will make the playoff this season, but they will be ready come next year.

The Timberwolves are lottery bound, which is not that bad after all. They’ve made some strides and with a top 3 pick, a healthy Al Jefferson and an improve Randy Foye, the Wolves could be on their way to bigger and better things.
27 (29) Wizards 12-42
Like I’ve said all along, I expect the Wizards to stand pat. With Arenas and Haywood returning, not to mention a top 3 draft pick, the Wizards feel they will be an entirely different team next season and I agree.
28 (27) Grizzlies 15-38
The Memphis Grizzlies will surprise everyone next year. For now, Mayo will do his best to contend for the ROY honors, which I believe he will eventually lose to Derrick Rose.

Camby is cheap and does not have a long term contract so he’s there to stay. Davis and Kaman will practically be given away for expiring contracts.

If they end up with the first pick to go along with Kevin Martin and somehow manage to sign a star player, they would be good enough to win 40 games next season and built from there.

NBA WIZARD 2008-09 POWER RANKING: WEEK 15

1 (4) Lakers 41-9
The Lakers are back on top and deservingly so. They are the only team in the nba to beat the Celtics and Cavaliers twice this season. They ended the Cavs 23 game home winning streak in a very impressive 101-91 victory with Lamar Odom scoring 28 points while grabbing 17 rebounds.
2 (3) Cavaliers 39-10
The Cavaliers management will make a very dangerous gamble if they stand pat. They are trying to save $20 million with the expiring contracts of Eric Snow and Wally and have somehow convinced Lebron that the current roster is good enough to win the championship. Why take a risk when they could make the following trades. 1. Wally, rookie J.J. Hickson and a draft pick for Amare. Or 2. The same two players for Chris Kaman, Steve Novak and either Ricky Davis or Jason Hart. Warning!!! If they don’t make a trade and don’t win the championship this year, Lebron will definitely leave in 2010.
3 (1) Celtics 42-11
After winning their previous 12 games, the Celtics have skidded losing their last two. I expect them to bounce back from their mini slump.
4 (5) Spurs 34-15
We are now getting a steady dose of consistent play from the Spurs, but the question is. Can they truly defeat L.A in a 7 game series? My answer is absolutely not. Unfortunately for them, is the fact that the only way to can improve their roster is by trading one of their ‘big 3 players’ which is not going to happen.
5 (2) Magic 38-12
Losing Jameer Nelson was a major blow to the Magic. Ty Lou will help, especially on defense. Also, he is a decent shooter as well, but the Magic will miss Nelson big game ability without question.

The Nuggets Carmelo Anthony returned from his injury and has been playing really well. I expected him to step up his game considering his recent all-star snubbing. Over the last 5 games, he’s averaged 24.8 ppg on 50 percent shooting. The Nuggets went 4-1 over that stretch.
7 (7) Trail Blazers 31-19
I’ve always proclaimed that for the Blazers to move up to the next level, Greg Oden will have to be a major factor on the defensive end. 12 or more rebound, 2.5 or more blocks will do the trick. Against New York he had 6 blocks and 12 rebounds which led to a narrow 109-108 win. He went without a block and had only 12 rebounds combined in the previous three games, during which the Blazers went 1-2. Brandon Roy is the man and a deserving all-star, but it will have to be about Oden on the defensive end.
8 (9) Rockets 31-20
For the first time this season the Rockets are healthy but have not been as impressive as you would think. Maybe team chemistry is off, or a lack of playing together. Either way, I expect things to get better in a hurry.
9 (8) Hornets 30-18
I was shock to see the Hornets go 2-2 without CP3, but a win against the inconsistent Raptors and the up and coming Timberwolves was not enough to convince me that they can play without CP3. Without him in the lineup, I expect them to struggle.
10 (14) Jazz 29-23
People talk about the Rockets injury situation, but I am more impress with the Jazz. I expect the Jazz to take advantage of Jason Terry’s injury and move up in the standings. And if Boozer can return soon, they will definitely make the playoffs.
11 (10) Mavericks 30-20
Jason Terry will surely be missed, but that means other players have to step up. He’s expected to be out a month and if they can keep the Jazz and Suns within reach they should be okay.
12 (13) Suns 28-21
Well it’s pretty obvious that Amare’s days in Phoenix are numbered. The key though, is they have to make the right decision and this is the way I see it. 1. Trade for the Cavs J.J. Hickson and Wally’s expiring $13 Million contract. 2. Trade for the Hawks defensive stud Josh Smith and Marvin Williams. 3. Trade for Golden State’s Monte Ellis, Anthony Morrow and Turiaf instead of Beidrins. 4. Trade for Dallas Josh Howard and rookie sensation Brandon Bass, though this trade is highly unlikely. I am sure that are other scenarios out there, but the trades involving Golden State and the Hawks are perhaps the two best ones.
13 (15) Hawks 29-21
Al Horford returned and though his numbers haven’t impressive, his presence helped the team win two straight games. However a loss the Clippers had me scratching my head until I put things in perspective. The Clips had six players in double figures and made 57 percent of their shots from the field. Most teams will lose the game if they allow that to happen.
14 (12) 76ers 25-24
Deep down the Sixers were hoping Brand would return and play well. Imagine if he had averaged 17ppg and 10rpg and hadn’t sustained his injury. They would have definitely tried to fool the Suns into taking him for Amare, or some other team for sure. Now they are stuck with a player whose injured for the rest of the season who doesn’t seem to fit their up tempo style.
15 (11) Heat 27-13
The Heat are also in a great position with the expiring contract of Shawn Marion, which is why I believe they are trying to move him. They can really improve their team if they pull the right trigger, because they still have Wade and Beasley.
16 (17) Pistons 27-22
Trading for Amare will take Rasheed Wallace expiring contract and Rodney Stuckey. I don’t think the Suns will be interested in any other player than those two. The Pistons are so high on Stuckey though, which leaves me believe they will not pull the trigger with the Suns, unless they can keep Stuckey. However, could not be in a better situation for the future. Between Iverson and Wallace, they have $35 million in expiring contracts. It wouldn’t surprise me to see them pull a blockbuster deal, because they certainly have the pieces.
17 (22) Bulls 22-29
The Bulls are doing their best to improve their roster and appears to be the leading candidate for trading for Amare. Gooden, Tyrus Thomas and the two key names being mentioned. I think John Paxson have to offer whatever it takes, because he is clearly in hot waters. Pairing Amare with ROY candidate Derrick Rose and Ben Gordon will give the Bulls a good trio to build on for the future.
18 (23) Nets 24-28
Devin Harris making the all-star team ahead of Vince Carter is a very good indication that the Nets are not a good team anymore. They could still make the playoff, but they would have to beat out Milwaukee which seems very unlikely right now.
19 (16) Knicks 21-29
I feel really bad for the Knicks. Just when it seemed like they were making some strides, they were dealt with the worst possible schedule. Kobe comes in gets 61, a Garden record. Only to be followed by Lebron’s 52 and what should have stayed and triple double in my book. Then end up with the Celtics ‘big 3.’ Who made the schedule?
20 (18) Bucks 24-29
I know Michael Redd is out for the rest of the season, but I think if Session, and Richard Jefferson could keep up with the surging Villenueva, the Bucks will maintain the eighth seed.
21 (19) Bobcats 19-31
Sometimes you have to get rid of your biggest mistake in order to move forward and that was what Mike did by trading Adam Morrison. Jordan could have drafted Brandon Roy ahead of Morrison and things would have been so different. Unfortunately, Radmanovic ended up being the best thing the Bobcats could get for Morrison.
22 (24) Warriors 17-35
The Warriors are a much better team with the addition of Monte Ellis, but maybe they should start looking at the future. Word is they are packaging Beidrins or Monte for Amare. If they can get away with keeping Monte and still get Amare, kudos to Chris Mullins.
23 (21) Pacers 20-32
The Pacers have Danny Granger as an all-star and are still within reach of the playoffs in the East. They simply have to win 3 or 4 games in a row and they will be right there.
24 (20) Timberwolves 17-33
The Timberwolves are done at least for this season and in a way give Kevin McHale the perfect excuse. The Wolves after starting the year 10-2 have gone on to lose 6 of their last 7 games. To add insult to injury the Wolves will be without their superstar center Al Jefferson for the rest of the season. At least now Kevin excuse if his team continues to lose will be that he was without his superstar center, which will be valid.
25 (26) Thunder 13-38
The Thunder I must admit are playing a lot better and second year stud Kevin Durant has been very impressive averaging 25.5ppg for the season. However, they could make some noise next season with the addition of a top 3 draft pick.
26 (25) Raptors 19-34
I am very sure the Raptors are doing everything in the power to change their roster. Either O’Neal or Bosh will have to go. They have clearly been the most disappointing team all season long.
27 (30) Clippers 12-39
The Clippers may have turned their season around with back to back road wins by a combined 45 points. Just kidding, they are still a bad team.
28 (28) Grizzlies 14-36
A 3-1 week was something to feel good about for a change. If they play .500 ball for the rest of the season, they would finish 30-52 and really have something to build on for next season.
29 (29) Wizards 11-40
Let’s be honest. The Wizards are not going to make a trade. Gilbert Arenas will not return. Next season they will improve by 30 games and everyone will forget the 2008-09 season ever happened.
30 (27) Kings 11-41
I have no idea what’s going on in Sac Town, but I feel really bad for a very proud basketball city. Maybe they will convince their new mayor, former nba great Kevin Johnson to come out of retirement and lace it up again.
1 (4) Lakers 41-9
The Lakers are back on top and deservingly so. They are the only team in the nba to beat the Celtics and Cavaliers twice this season. They ended the Cavs 23 game home winning streak in a very impressive 101-91 victory with Lamar Odom scoring 28 points while grabbing 17 rebounds.
2 (3) Cavaliers 39-10
The Cavaliers management will make a very dangerous gamble if they stand pat. They are trying to save $20 million with the expiring contracts of Eric Snow and Wally and have somehow convinced Lebron that the current roster is good enough to win the championship. Why take a risk when they could make the following trades. 1. Wally, rookie J.J. Hickson and a draft pick for Amare. Or 2. The same two players for Chris Kaman, Steve Novak and either Ricky Davis or Jason Hart. Warning!!! If they don’t make a trade and don’t win the championship this year, Lebron will definitely leave in 2010.
3 (1) Celtics 42-11
After winning their previous 12 games, the Celtics have skidded losing their last two. I expect them to bounce back from their mini slump.
4 (5) Spurs 34-15
We are now getting a steady dose of consistent play from the Spurs, but the question is. Can they truly defeat L.A in a 7 game series? My answer is absolutely not. Unfortunately for them, is the fact that the only way to can improve their roster is by trading one of their ‘big 3 players’ which is not going to happen.
5 (2) Magic 38-12
Losing Jameer Nelson was a major blow to the Magic. Ty Lou will help, especially on defense. Also, he is a decent shooter as well, but the Magic will miss Nelson big game ability without question.

NBA WIZARD 2008-09 POWER RANKING: WEEK 14
RANK (LAST WK)REC.
1 (1) Celtics 40-9
Maybe the Celtics will use Ray Allen’s all-star snub as a motivation, as if they really need it. They have clearly been the best team for two straight weeks and their 11 game win streak is evident of that.
2 (4) Magic 36-10
I commend the Magic on getting three players in this year’s all-star game, but I am not going to say they are the second best team in the league. Their win over the Cavaliers though impressive, was because the Cavs had two starters out.
3 (3) Cavaliers 37-9
If the season was over today, three things would come back to haunt the Cavs. Their loss against the Wizards in Washington. Their overtime loss against Chicago in Cleveland. And Big Z decision to return one day later against the Clippers rather than suit up against the Magic in Orlando. If he could play one day later, he could sure play against Orlando. Had he, I am convinced the Cavs would have beat Orlando. He poses a major problem for the Magic center Dwight Howard, because of his ability to shoot from as far as the 3 point line.
4 (2) Lakers 37-9
I am not one to wish illness on anyone, but karma is a weird thing. Do you remember when Andrew Bynum recklessly foul Gerald Wallace and walked over his ailing body as if he didn’t care? Rather than suspend him, the nba only increased his flagrant one to flagrant two. Rather than a suspension, he’s going to be out for 8-12 weeks due to a a knee injury he suffered. The Lakers will still do well because I expect Kobe to probably blow by D-Wade and take over the scoring lead, but they will miss Bynum without question.
5 (5) Spurs 32-14
Do you get the feeling that Manu is beginning to play like the Manu of old? I certainly do. Then again, regardless of how well Manu plays, I still see the Spurs one notch below the Lakers. The Spurs could really use a defensive player next to Timmy.
6 (6) Nuggets 31-16
Chauncey Billups was selected to the all-star team as expected, but Carmelo snubbing could serve as a motivation for him and the team. In all honesty, Carmelo has been injured and his numbers are the lowest since his rookie season which is why he was snubbed. I expect him to use this moment as a fuel in the second half of the season.

Three straight wins and an all-star selection was just the recipe needed to move the Blazers up after week 14. Brandon Roy was clearly deserving of being selected. Though I don’t expect Blazers Rookie Rudy Fernandez from Spain to win the slam dunk contest, I anticipate that by the end of the slam dunk contest he would have introduced himself to America.
8 (7) Hornets 28-16
The Hornets ended the week with losses against Golden State and the Spurs which clearly hurt them. They clearly miss Pargo, their backup point guard from last season. They must address that, because too much strain is being put on Chris Paul.
9 (8) Rockets 29-19
The Rockets welcome back Yao, who was actually joined by McGrady and Artest, but that only lasted for one game. McGrady was out with an ankle injury the very next against Golden State and the Rockets won 110-93. It appears the Rockets are on the verge of having their three stars healthy and playing together.
10 (13) Mavericks 27-19
I have been an advocate of trading Josh Howard for Josh Smith all season long, but that is if the Mavericks can convince the Hawks to make that trade. Smith is a great finisher and defender and will fit in very well the Mavericks. In the main time, the Mavericks are simply a decent team.
11 (11) Heat 25-21
The Heat have moved up in the standings, thanks to the slumping Detroit Pistons. However, the idea of D-Wade being a legitimate MVP contender can be put to rest. That race is only between two players. Ironically the two best players in the league, Kobe and Lebron.
12 (12) 76ers 23-23
The Sixers welcome back Elton Brand who came off the bench to score 9 points. The reality is simple. Will the Sixers stay pat and allow Brand to simply be just a decent player averaging 12-15 points and about 9 rebounds, while paying him $15 million, or will they accept the reality that they overpaid him and move him at the first opportunity they get? I definitely think the Sixers are seriously shopping Brand.
13 (14) Suns 25-20
Amare does not like the style of play that new head coach Terry Porter has the team playing this season. He clearly wants to leaves and will do his best to probably win the all-star mvp award this year in Phoenix. The Suns could wind up being a great team, if they can pull the right trigger for Amare, because believe me, a ton of teams will give up a lot to get him.
14 (15) Jazz 26-22
The Jazz are still without two starters, but somehow are doing their best to keep pace in the West. They may not be moving up in the standings, but they are certainly not slipping. The Mavericks have pulled away slightly, but the Jazz are right there with the Suns competing for the final playoff spot.
15 (10) Hawks 27-20
I know their starting center Horford has been out, but to going 5-8 during that stretch is simply unacceptable especially when nine of those games were against sub .500 teams. Something needs to change in Hawks land.
16 (21) Knicks 21-25
With the Bucks losing Michael Redd for the rest of the season, the thought of the Knicks making the playoffs has become a serious reality. A 3-0 record in week 14 shows their upside and I expect them to clearly make a push.
17 (16) Pistons 25-21
The Pistons loss their fourth straight game at home for the first time since 2000-01 season. The word is, new head coach Michael Curry’s substitution patterns are coming down from his boss Joe Dumars, because if they weren’t, he will be on the verge of being fired. Deep down, I know Antonio Mcdyess is hoping he had opted for the Cavs rather than going back to the Pistons.
18 (19) Bucks 24-27
Charlie Villanueva has been the one constant in Milwaukee and helped his team win their last two games in week 14. With Redd being out, the Bucks will need more from other players, mainly Richard Jefferson to really step up for them to hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.
19 (18) Bobcats 19-28
Beating the Lakers in L.A. in double overtime was a nice way to start the week. Unfortunately the loss of Gerald Wallace was too much to bear. The Bobcats finished the week with two straight losses while Wallace was out of the lineup.
20 (17) Timberwolves 16-30
The T-Wolves are much better these days, but after their impressive 10-2 record to start the year, have gone on to lose their last three games. I believe the snubbing of Al Jefferson has affected them a bit, but I expect Kevin McHale to use that to refocus his team. Either way, the Wolves are a young up and coming team so we can’t really expect much from them.
21 (20) Pacers 19-29
Danny Granger was selected as a first time all-star as expected, which is the only thing the Pacers have to be proud of this season. I will say this, the Pacers could have easily won five more games this season and had they done that, would have had a 24-24 record.
22 (25) Bulls 21-27
The only person that needs to be worried right now is John Paxson. Other than having a serious contender for the ROY award in Derrick Rose, the Bulls and their fans have nothing to be proud of this year. It all falls back on Paxson, because he was the one that put this team together.
23 (22) Nets 21-27
I will name a few players who were deserving of making the all-star team ahead of Devin Harris, beginning with his own teammate Vince Carter. Then you have Boston’s Ray Allen and Mo Williams from Cleveland. Harris has been slumping over the last two weeks and so has the Nets. Once a playoff team, they are now sinking rapidly.
24 (24) Warriors 15-33
The Warriors are a much improve team now that Monte Ellis has returned. However, I will like to make a suggestion to legendary head coach Don Nelson. What if you played Turiaf and Biedrins together, maybe that might help with the Warriors rebounding deficiency? What if you play rookie Morrow a few more minutes. Isn’t he the best shooter on the team? Maybe that might open up driving lanes for Ellis and Maggette. Just a thought.
25 (23) Raptors 19-30
For as much as many of us rave about Chris Bosh, I will be the first to point out that he is really not a good on ball defender. You add in the fact that he may not re-sign in 2010, maybe the Raptors might surprise everyone with a trade. I will be very shock if they do, but with the way things are in Toronto anything is possible.
26 (26) Thunder 11-37
The Thunder still one of the worse teams in the league has made some strides in the right direction as of late. I expect them to improve by 15 to 20 games next season and Kevin Durant to make his first all-star team.
27 (30) Kings 11-38
Are the Kings really serious about paring Kevin Martin with Shawn Marion, or is it just rumors? I really like that trade for them. Even though they have no chance of making the playoffs, they will put themselves in a great position with Martin and Marion, not to mention a high draft pick for next season.
28 (27) Grizzlies 11-35
All new head coach Lionel Hollins needs to do is teach his young team how to be competitive. Believe me, by next season, the Grizzlies will improve by 20 games and Avery Johnson will regret not taking the job.
29 (29) Wizards 10-37
The Wizards are tanking this season and Gilbert Arenas will not return for sure. I expect them to have one of the biggest turnarounds next year, but that will be because of the addition of a top three pick and the return of Arenas.
30 (28) Clippers 10-37
Who could have predicted at the start of this season, that the Clippers would be the worse team at some point in the season. I don’t even think a trade at this point is a good idea, unless it saves them money.

Rather than suspend him, the nba only increased his flagrant one to flagrant two. Rather than a suspension, he’s going to be out for 8-12 weeks due to a a knee injury he suffered. The Lakers will still do well because I expect Kobe to probably blow by D-Wade and take over the scoring lead, but they will miss Bynum without question.
5 (5) Spurs 32-14
Do you get the feeling that Manu is beginning to play like the Manu of old? I certainly do. Then again, regardless of how well Manu plays, I still see the Spurs one notch below the Lakers. The Spurs could really use a defensive player next to Timmy.
6 (6) Nuggets 31-16
Chauncey Billups was selected to the all-star team as expected, but Carmelo snubbing could serve as a motivation for him and the team. In all honesty, Carmelo has been injured and his numbers are the lowest since his rookie season which is why he was snubbed. I expect him to use this moment as a fuel in the second half of the season.
7 (9) Trail Blazers 29-17
Three straight wins and an all-star selection was just the recipe needed to move the Blazers up after week 14. Brandon Roy was clearly deserving of being selected. Though I don’t expect Blazers Rookie Rudy Fernandez from Spain to win the slam dunk contest, I anticipate that by the end of the slam dunk contest he would have introduced himself to America.
8 (7) Hornets 28-16
The Hornets ended the week with losses against Golden State and the Spurs which clearly hurt them. They clearly miss Pargo, their backup point guard from last season. They must address that, because too much strain is being put on Chris Paul.
9 (8) Rockets 29-19
The Rockets welcome back Yao, who was actually joined by McGrady and Artest, but that only lasted for one game. McGrady was out with an ankle injury the very next against Golden State and the Rockets won 110-93. It appears the Rockets are on the verge of having their three stars healthy and playing together.
10 (13) Mavericks 27-19
I have been an advocate of trading Josh Howard for Josh Smith all season long, but that is if the Mavericks can convince the Hawks to make that trade. Smith is a great finisher and defender and will fit in very well the Mavericks. In the main time, the Mavericks are simply a decent team.
11 (11) Heat 25-21
The Heat have moved up in the standings, thanks to the slumping Detroit Pistons. However, the idea of D-Wade being a legitimate MVP contender can be put to rest. That race is only between two players. Ironically the two best players in the league, Kobe and Lebron.
12 (12) 76ers 23-23
The Sixers welcome back Elton Brand who came off the bench to score 9 points. The reality is simple. Will the Sixers stay pat and allow Brand to simply be just a decent player averaging 12-15 points and about 9 rebounds, while paying him $15 million, or will they accept the reality that they overpaid him and move him at the first opportunity they get? I definitely think the Sixers are seriously shopping Brand.
13 (14) Suns 25-20
Amare does not like the style of play that new head coach Terry Porter has the team playing this season. He clearly wants to leaves and will do his best to probably win the all-star mvp award this year in Phoenix. The Suns could wind up being a great team, if they can pull the right trigger for Amare, because believe me, a ton of teams will give up a lot to get him.
14 (15) Jazz 26-22
The Jazz are still without two starters, but somehow are doing their best to keep pace in the West. They may not be moving up in the standings, but they are certainly not slipping. The Mavericks have pulled away slightly, but the Jazz are right there with the Suns competing for the final playoff spot.
15 (10) Hawks 27-20
I know their starting center Horford has been out, but to going 5-8 during that stretch is simply unacceptable especially when nine of those games were against sub .500 teams. Something needs to change in Hawks land.
16 (21) Knicks 21-25
With the Bucks losing Michael Redd for the rest of the season, the thought of the Knicks making the playoffs has become a serious reality. A 3-0 record in week 14 shows their upside and I expect them to clearly make a push.
17 (16) Pistons 25-21
The Pistons loss their fourth straight game at home for the first time since 2000-01 season. The word is, new head coach Michael Curry’s substitution patterns are coming down from his boss Joe Dumars, because if they weren’t, he will be on the verge of being fired. Deep down, I know Antonio Mcdyess is hoping he had opted for the Cavs rather than going back to the Pistons.
18 (19) Bucks 24-27
Charlie Villanueva has been the one constant in Milwaukee and helped his team win their last two games in week 14. With Redd being out, the Bucks will need more from other players, mainly Richard Jefferson to really step up for them to hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.
19 (18) Bobcats 19-28
Beating the Lakers in L.A. in double overtime was a nice way to start the week. Unfortunately the loss of Gerald Wallace was too much to bear. The Bobcats finished the week with two straight losses while Wallace was out of the lineup.
20 (17) Timberwolves 16-30
The T-Wolves are much better these days, but after their impressive 10-2 record to start the year, have gone on to lose their last three games. I believe the snubbing of Al Jefferson has affected them a bit, but I expect Kevin McHale to use that to refocus his team. Either way, the Wolves are a young up and coming team so we can’t really expect much from them.
21 (20) Pacers 19-29
Danny Granger was selected as a first time all-star as expected, which is the only thing the Pacers have to be proud of this season. I will say this, the Pacers could have easily won five more games this season and had they done that, would have had a 24-24 record.
22 (25) Bulls 21-27
The only person that needs to be worried right now is John Paxson. Other than having a serious contender for the ROY award in Derrick Rose, the Bulls and their fans have nothing to be proud of this year. It all falls back on Paxson, because he was the one that put this team together.
23 (22) Nets 21-27
I will name a few players who were deserving of making the all-star team ahead of Devin Harris, beginning with his own teammate Vince Carter. Then you have Boston’s Ray Allen and Mo Williams from Cleveland. Harris has been slumping over the last two weeks and so has the Nets. Once a playoff team, they are now sinking rapidly.
24 (24) Warriors 15-33
The Warriors are a much improve team now that Monte Ellis has returned. However, I will like to make a suggestion to legendary head coach Don Nelson. What if you played Turiaf and Biedrins together, maybe that might help with the Warriors rebounding deficiency? What if you play rookie Morrow a few more minutes. Isn’t he the best shooter on the team? Maybe that might open up driving lanes for Ellis and Maggette. Just a thought.
25 (23) Raptors 19-30
For as much as many of us rave about Chris Bosh, I will be the first to point out that he is really not a good on ball defender. You add in the fact that he may not re-sign in 2010, maybe the Raptors might surprise everyone with a trade. I will be very shock if they do, but with the way things are in Toronto anything is possible.
26 (26) Thunder 11-37
The Thunder still one of the worse teams in the league has made some strides in the right direction as of late. I expect them to improve by 15 to 20 games next season and Kevin Durant to make his first all-star team.
27 (30) Kings 11-38
Are the Kings really serious about paring Kevin Martin with Shawn Marion, or is it just rumors? I really like that trade for them. Even though they have no chance of making the playoffs, they will put themselves in a great position with Martin and Marion, not to mention a high draft pick for next season.
28 (27) Grizzlies 11-35
All new head coach Lionel Hollins needs to do is teach his young team how to be competitive. Believe me, by next season, the Grizzlies will improve by 20 games and Avery Johnson will regret not taking the job.
29 (29) Wizards 10-37
The Wizards are tanking this season and Gilbert Arenas will not return for sure. I expect them to have one of the biggest turnarounds next year, but that will be because of the addition of a top three pick and the return of Arenas.
30 (28) Clippers 10-37
Who could have predicted at the start of this season, that the Clippers would be the worse team at some point in the season. I don’t even think a trade at this point is a good idea, unless it saves them money.

NBA WIZARD 2008-09 POWER RANKING: WEEK 13

1 (4) Celtics 37-9
I guess the Celtics have recovered from their slump from a few weeks ago, when they went 2-7 over a 9 games stretch. An eight game winning streak may have cured their bruised egos.
2 (3) Lakers 35-8
The Lakers have been steady and seem to clearly have the Spurs number. A win over the injury riddled Cavs helped boost their confidence, but their defense still remains a subject of discussion.
3 (2) Cavaliers 34-8
A four game West Coast trip without starting guard Delonte West and starting center Big Z was a good test for the Cavaliers. They lost to the Lakers, but followed up with impressive wins over Portland, Golden State and Utah. Lebron earned the Eastern Conference Player of the Week Award, in part to his game winning buzzer beater in Oakland.
4 (1) Magic 33-10
The Orlando Magic loss two straight after an impressive 33-8 start. I believe they reach their peak in their first half and I definitely expect a down slide in the second half of the season. I still expect them to finish with the 4th best record in the league, but rather than going 66-16 like they were previously tracking, they will probably end up 60-22.
5 (5) Spurs 29-14
The Spurs ended their perfect 3-0 week with a loss against the Lakers at Staples. In the past few seasons the Spurs were always considered an eminent threat, but this season they stand no chance against the Lakers. They can stay pat, or they should make a drastic move if they expect to seriously contend with the Lakers.
6 (6) Nuggets 29-15
A narrow 113-115 loss to the Rockets helped the Nuggets refocus. They won their last two games including an impressive 20 point blowout over the Jazz to end the week. Carmelo’s return should help bolster their scoring.
7 (7) Hornets 26-14
With Tyson out and West banged up, CP3 is doing his best to keep the Hornets afloat. Over the last five games, CP3 has averaged 25.8ppg, 11.6apg, while making 56 percent of his shots. The Hornets were 4-1 during that stretch.
8 (10) Rockets 28-17
If I had to give an award for the most impressive team considering their situation, it will have to go to the Houston Rockets. McGrady, Yao and Artest have all missed a ton of games, yet coach Adelman has no made excuses. His team continues to play well which is why many believe the Rockets could be the most dangerous team in the Western Conference when they are at full strength.
9 (9) Trail Blazers 26-17
The Blazers would have had a perfect 3-0 week if not for Lebron’s 34 point 14 assist performance. The one good thing is, they seem to have back off their threat about Miles and moved on. $9 million will be added to their cap this season and the next, which will restrict them from signing new free agents. Greg Oden’s 24 point 15 rebounds performance against the Bucks could be a sign of things to come. If he averages around 12ppg, 12rpg and 2+ blocks next season, they may not necessarily need to sign another player.
10 (14) Hawks 26-17
The Hawks 26-17 record is a reflection of injuries to Josh Smith and Al Horford. I still consider them one of the most dangerous teams in the East. At full strength they will cause the Celtics some major problems in the playoffs and could even upset the Celts.
11 (13) Heat 23-19
D-Wade is playing great, but I feel it’s necessary to put things in the proper perspective. The number one requirement for winning the MVP Award is that your team must win at least 50 games. The Heat would have to go 27-13 (.675) over their last 40 games. Even if that were to happen, Lebron or Kobe would probably win it because their teams will probably win 60 plus games each. For D-Wade to be the MVP, Miami will have to win 55 games, which means they will have to go 32-8 to finish the season. So now, let’s stop all this nonsense about Wade being an MVP this season because it is simply not going to happen, period!
12 (11) 76ers 21-21
The Sixers are playing very great and have made it back into the playoff picture in the East. It will be interesting to see what happens when Brand returns.
13 (15) Mavericks 25-19
The Mavericks inconsistent play may catch up with them, which is why they will spend the entire season battling the Suns and Jazz for the final two seeds in the Western Conference. I think they must trade Josh Howard in an effort to improve. The question is who will they trade for?
14 (8) Suns 24-18
If Amare isn’t scoring, his loses his defensive edge. The Suns are more of a half court team and he is more of a running the break type player. I am not saying just trade the guy, but if he’s really unhappy like I think he is with the direction of the team then it’s time to close that chapter. A player with his magnitude could bring in, a defensive stopper like a Josh Smith from Atlanta for example.
15 (12) Jazz 25-20
The Jazz are only one game out of the playoffs and that’s not bad, considering all the injuries they endured this season. Carlos Boozer may be the ace. When he returns from injury, he will either put the Jazz over the hump, or serve as the perfect trade bait, thanks to the improvement of Paul Millsap.
16 (17) Pistons 24-19
The Pistons knew they were taking a risk by trading away Chauncey for Iverson, but they figured it was a calculative one. With Billups they were not going to win a championship and neither will they with Iverson. The good news is, at the end of the season Iverson along with Wallace contracts totaling $35 million will come off the books. This will allow them to sign if not one, maybe two free agents, or they might just wait until the 2010 season when Lebron, Wade, Dirk not to mention a few others will be free agents.
17 (23) Timberwolves 15-27
The Wolves have completely turned the corner and have gone 9-2 over their last 11 games. Too bad they are in the West, because if they were in the East, they would actually make the playoffs if they continued at this pace. I was the hardest critic of Kevin McHale, but I will be first to commend him on a job well done. The Wolves have joined the conversation with the Blazers and Grizzlies, as one of the league’s most intriguing young team.
18 (18) Bobcats 18-26
The Bobcats have been constructed as an Eastern Conference ‘grind it out team.’ A recent trade for Mavs center Diop, only strengthen that claim. The question is will it hold up when they embark on their four game Western Conference trip.
19 (16) Bucks 22-25
The Bucks have a 2-3 record over their last 5 games, but Charlie Villanueva did more than his fair share to help them win. In only 28 minutes per game, he averaged 23ppg, 8.4rpg, while making 57.7 percent of his shots. You can expect Villanueva numbers to increase now that Redd is expected to miss the rest of the season. Richard Jefferson and Bogut will have to follow suit and step up for the Bucks to be competitive.
20 (20) Pacers 17-27
Everyone predicts Danny Granger will make the all-star team for the first time in his career, so I took the liberty of analyzing that claim. 26ppg, 5.1rpg, 3.4apg seems very impressive, but like Eric Snow said the other night, his team is only 17-27. He hasn’t made his teammate better. Also, he is averaging 19.365 shot attempts. If any decent player took 20 shots a game, wouldn’t they too average at least 26ppg. I am not taking anything away from Granger, but he has not made his teammate better and the record shows.
21 (24) Knicks 18-25
The Knicks are once again in the playoff hunt thanks to a 3-1 record in week 13. I am not sure if they will make the playoffs, but in the East anything’s possible. Currently they are only a game behind the Bucks for the eighth and final seed in the East.

There was a time this season, when the notion of the Nets having two all-stars was actually a high probability. Vince, the perennial all-star and Devin Harris, the first timer. Harris went from averaging as high as 25ppg earlier this season, to 13.4ppg on 32.8 field goal percentage over the last 5 games. The Nets went 1-4 during that stretch and Harris may have ended his chances to make the all-star team because Vince has been more consistent. There’s no way both players will make it now that the Nets are slumping.
23 (22) Raptors 18-28
There’s really nothing to report out of Toronto except a rumor and one highlight. Rumor has it Jermaine for Marion is being discussed as we speak. The highlight is point guard Jose Calderon has not missed a free throw this season, 86 straight to be exact and is 11 away from tying the record of 97 straight makes by Michael Williams. Williams made 84 straight in the 1992-93 season and 13 at the start of the 1993-94 season nba season. Calderon’s 86 straight is the new record for one season, now he’s chasing number 97.
24 (25) Warriors 14-31
Not for Lebron James buzzer beater game winning shot, the Warriors would have gone 3-1. They did welcome back Monte Ellis. I expect a rapid acceleration in the second half of the season, but it may be too late for them to make the playoffs.

Since beaten the Cavs on January 15th in a 102-93 overtime victory, the Bulls have gone on to loss five straight. Other than Derrick Rose chase for Rookie of the Year (ROY), Bulls fans have nothing to look forward to this season.

I don’t blame Avery Johnson for passing up the gig, especially when the Mavericks are still paying him. But I will say this, by next season Avery will regret not taking this job because with a high draft pick and a year under their belts, the Grizz will be a much better team.

The Clippers are bad and Davis out for 10 games with a strain just seems wrong. He’s clearly given up on his team. I feel bad for the Clips because I think they had great intentions when they signed Davis. I definitely expect Chris Kaman to be moved before the deadline. Considering how terrible they are, they should be looking to reduce their payroll by trading for an expiring contract.
29 (29) Wizards 9-34
Things are looking very bright in D.C these days, but believe me it’s not because of the Wizards. I think Gilbert should take the entire season off. They could have a top 5 pick and Gilbert returning next season making them an instant playoff team again.
30 (28) Kings 10-35
Rumor has it, the Heat are trying to send Marion to the Kings for Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas. Maybe the Kings are looking at a Marion-Martin combo as a nice nucleus. I still believe they should not have fired Reggie Theus.

I don’t blame Avery Johnson for passing up the gig, especially when the Mavericks are still paying him. But I will say this, by next season Avery will regret not taking this job because with a high draft pick and a year under their belts, the Grizz will be a much better team.
28 (30) Clippers 10-33
The Clippers are bad and Davis out for 10 games with a strain just seems wrong. He’s clearly given up on his team. I feel bad for the Clips because I think they had great intentions when they signed Davis. I definitely expect Chris Kaman to be moved before the deadline. Considering how terrible they are, they should be looking to reduce their payroll by trading for an expiring contract.
29 (29) Wizards 9-34
Things are looking very bright in D.C these days, but believe me it’s not because of the Wizards. I think Gilbert should take the entire season off. They could have a top 5 pick and Gilbert returning next season making them an instant playoff team again.
30 (28) Kings 10-35
Rumor has it, the Heat are trying to send Marion to the Kings for Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas. Maybe the Kings are looking at a Marion-Martin combo as a nice nucleus. I still believe they should not have fired Reggie Theus.

NBA WIZARD 2008-09 POWER RANKING: WEEK 12

1 (2) Magic 33-8
I think people better start believing because the Orlando Magic are for real. With Dwight Howard pounding the middle, they more than make up on the perimeter by having the best 3 point shooting team.
2 (1) Cavaliers 31-7
I understand Lebron likes to pace himself, but with Big Z and Delonte West out, the Cavs are losing 26ppg. It’s time for Lebron to be more like Michael Jordan than Oscar Robinson. He has too much ability to keep jacking up long shots or forcing passes.
3 (3) Lakers 31-8
The Lakers should take advantage of Big Z and Delonte out of the Cavs lineup. I expect them to move up even though they’ve been slumping as of late.
4 (4) Celtics 33-9
After losing 4 straight with their last lost against the Cavaliers, the Celtics have recovered nicely winning their last 4 games. I guess they needed a reality check and are happy to finally have the radar off their backs.
5 (5) Spurs 26-13
The Spurs had a light week highlighted by a nail biting 112-111 win over the Lakers to start the week at home. The Lakers felt they should have won the game, but the Spurs are glad to be in the fifth spot.
6 (7) Nuggets 27-14
The Nuggets had a 2-1 record in week 12 and are doing their best to stay afloat with Carmelo out. The one constant to the Nuggets success is Chauncey Billups. He should be an all-star this year along with Carmelo.
7 (6) Hornets 24-13
The Hornets went 2-2 in week 12, but considering the injury to the star forward David West they should be happy, especially because one of those losses was against the perfect 20-0 Cavs in Cleveland.
8 (8) Suns 23-15
I like the Suns, but if Amare doesn’t improve his rebounding and defense, the Suns will be lucky to get to the second round in the playoffs. Shaq is playing well, 18ppg, 9rpg, but his lack of defense combined with Amare means the Suns will struggle all season long to move up.
9 (11) Trail Blazers 24-16
The Trail Blazers management should have put a lid on it, rather than trying to threaten teams against signing Darius Miles. The Memphis Grizzlies called their bluff and now the Blazers have to add $9 million to the salary cap for this season and the next.
10 (9) Rockets 25-16
There’s not much to say about the Rockets other than the obvious. McGrady and Artest are out again yet they managed a 1-1 week. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rockets are shopping McGrady. The only problem is, with his history of injuries who will take the chance?
11 (18) 76ers 20-20
The Sixers have been the hottest team in the league winning 7 straight games and all the while, Elton Brand, their prized free agent from the summer has been out. This has been a blessing in disguise because when Brand returns, he will have to adjust to the Sixers up and down style and not vice versa.
12 (10) Jazz 24-17
The Jazz are one game behind the Rockets, but are perhaps the most dangerous team in the West. I am not saying they are on the same level as the Lakers, but they are as good as any other team in the West. And when Boozer returns, they will be a team to reckon with.
13 (15) Heat 22-18
D-Wade continues to play well and the Heat are hovering around the six seed in the East. Rumor has it that the Heat may be trying to trade the Shawn Marion to the Raptors for Jermaine O’Neal.
14 (13) Hawks 23-16
The injury bug has made it to the Hawks and being without center Al Harford has taken a toll. A 1-2 record in week 12 was evident of this. Keep in mind, just a few weeks ago, the Hawks believed they were as good as the Magic.
15 (14) Mavericks 23-17
The Mavs, Blazers and Jazz will battle all season long for the last two seeds in the West. After week 12, the Mavs were out. They should be very concern because I think it will boil down to them and the Blazers for the eighth seed in the West.
16 (16) Bucks 20-23
The Bucks have crept back into the playoff picture. Michael Redd is playing like an all-star again, almost 25ppg over the last 4 games.
17 (12) Pistons 22-17
It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Pistons trade Rip Hamilton, or maybe they might just wait and let A.I and Wallace $35 million combined salaries expire after the season. Winning streaks are alternated by losing streaks and inconsistency is the name of the game in Detroit.
18 (19) Bobcats 16-27
With the Nets slumping the Bobcats have crept up to two games behind them for the eighth and final spot in the East. Their recent trade for the Mavs center Dasagna Diop should help bolster their interior defense.
19 (21) Bulls 18-23
The Bulls welcomed back Kirk Hinrick which means Derrick Rose will have some help at the point guard position. Their highlight of the week was the overtime win over the Cavs in Chi-Town.
20 (23) Pacers 15-25
Mike Dunleavy is back from injury and Danny Granger couldn’t be happier. I expect his numbers to increase and I expect him to make the all-star team for the first time in February. Other than that, the Pacers will continue to keep things interesting but lose close games.
21 (17) Nets 19-22
Devin Harris had a good chance of making his first all-star team, but with the Nets recent slump his chances have dwindle as of late. With three straight losses Harris may be losing out to the Orlando Jameer Nelson.
22 (20) Raptors 16-26
With four straight losses, the Raptors have reverted back to their losing ways. I don’t see how they can retain Chris Bosh in 2010 when he becomes a free agent if they don’t improve. Could he be the problem, even though he’s having an all-star season? Or, will the Raptors unload Jermaine O’Neal to the Heat for Shawn Marion
23 (18) Timberwolves 12-16
The Wolves lost a 99-96 nail biter to the Heat after winning their previous five games. They obviously will not make the playoffs, but Kevin McHale has made a difference and they seem to be listening to him.
24 (24) Knicks 15-24
All the Knicks need to do is go on a 4 or 5 game winning streak and they will be right back in the playoffs hunt in the East. Reality check. I don’t expect that to happen and I don’t expect them to make the playoffs.
25 (25) Warriors 12-29
Monte Ellis has began practicing with the team and could be returning soon. Unfortunately it might be a little too late. The Warriors have dug too deep a hole to make the playoffs.
26 (28) Thunder 8-34
The Oklahoma Thunder have moved up considerably from where they were earlier this season. They still have the league’s worst record, but moved up because they have been winning as of late.

The only thing exciting about D.C these days is the inauguration of Barack Obama, the nation’s first African American President on Tuesday January 20, 2009.

CHRIS KAMAN COULD BE A CAVALIERS VERY SOON
Rather than risk losing Lebron James to free agency in 2010, the Cavaliers may be looking to make another move before the deadline. The Cavaliers have a very valuable trade asset in Wally Szczerbiak, who is in the final year of his contract that pays him $13.775 million. In an effort to show up their front line, the Cavs may be looking to trade for Clippers center Chris Kaman. The terms of the deal are not clear, because the Cavs may have to take either Ricky Davis or Jason Hart for the trade to work under the nba collective bargaining agreement.
The Cavs would trade Wally and unfortunately J.J. Hickson, the rookie whom the Cavs are very fond of to the Clippers in exchange for Chris Kaman, Steve Novak and either, Jason Hart or Ricky Davis. The Clippers would much rather part with Davis, considering his recent suspension by the nba for drug violations. Hart is signed for the rest of the season and is viewed as insurance policy for the backup point guard position, just in case Baron Davis gets injured. This fact makes it very unlikely the Clippers would want to part with Hart.
Since acquiring Marcus Camby from Denver, who is currently second in the league in rebounds and blocks at 13.6rpg and 2.66bpg respectively, Kaman has become expandable. The trade for power forward Zack Randolph pretty much sealed Kaman’s fate. Marcus Camby is sign through next season, which makes it highly unlikely that the Clippers will trade him. Kaman on the other hand is signed for three more seasons after this one. Hence, Kaman is on the trading block and the Cavaliers will be glad to take advantage of his services.

1 (2) Cavaliers 29-6
For the first time this season, the top rank team in the nba is not the Lakers or Celtics. The Cavaliers earned the number one rank by handily beaten the Celtics in Cleveland 98-83. Lebron strengthen his position as the league top candidate for the MVP Award with 38 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assist, 4 steals and 3 blocks. He shut down the Celtics Paul Pierce by holding him to 11 points in the game.
2 (1) Lakers 30-6
Yes, I know the Lakers have the best record in basketball, but they had to really struggle down the stretch at home to beat the Heat and the Pacers. The Lakers may play defense in spurts, but if they expect to win the nba championship, they must be more consistent on that end of the court.
3 (4) Magic 30-8
The Magic have been steady all season long. They showed some maturity on the road edging the Spurs in San Antonio 105-98. I expect Magic point guard Jameer Nelson to be selected as a reserve for this year’s all-star team. He has been the catalyst in directing the Magic offense this season.
4 (3) Celtics 30-9
I wouldn’t say the Celtics have lost their confidence, but I will say they are a very shaky team right about now. After losing three straight, the Celtics were hoping to get back on track against the Cavs in Cleveland, but were clearly out played. The Celtics are 2-7 after a 27-2 start and are really soul searching right now.
5 (5) Spurs 24-12
The Spurs seem to have accepted playing second fiddle to the Lakers for the entire season. Needless to say, they are the second best team in the Western Conference and still, nobody is talking about them.
6 (6) Hornets 22-11
The Hornets began the week with a very impressive 116-105 win against the Lakers in L.A. They followed their impressive win with a stinker against the Jazz in Utah and loss 116-90. Chris Paul dominated Deron Williams in the battle of the point guards, but it was not enough for the win. The Hornets ended the week with another impressive win by blowing out the Clippers 107-80 to maintain their sixth rank from the week before.
7 (8) Nuggets 25-13
Even with Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets leading scorer out for a month, they still have been competitive and posted a 2-1 week. Their lone loss came against the Pistons in Denver in a very close game, 93-90. Anthony is expected to be out for at least two to three more weeks.
8 (9) Suns 21-13
Entering the season, the Suns Amare Stoudemire was anticipating leading the league in scoring. He figured Shaq would be his sidekick. Well, just the opposite has happened. I predicted that for the Suns to be successful, Shaq would have to be more dominant than he was before leaving the Heat. At 17.4ppg and 9rpg, it is fair to say Shaq has not disappointed.
9 (14) Rockets 24-15
I don’t know how they keep doing it, but the Rockets having been finding ways to win when they need to. A 3-1 week and the return of Tracy McGrady have the Rockets being very optimistic as of late.
10 (15) Jazz 22-15
Carlos Boozer was quoted saying he would test the free agent market at the end of the season. I don’t expect the Jazz to let him walk, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see them trade him before the trade deadline, when he returns from his injury. Reason: Paul Millsap, Boozer’s replacement averaged 18.33ppg and 11.66rpg in 3 wins in week 11. He’s been averaging similar numbers since entering the starting lineup. The Jazz believes with minutes he will make up for Boozer, not to mention he is a better defender than Boozer, a staple that Jazz coach Jerry Sloan craves.
11 (13) Trail Blazers 22-15
The Blazers attempted to scare teams by sending out emails to the rest of the league, warning them that the signing of Darius Miles would lead to a law suit. Sorry, but the threats were ignored by the Memphis Grizzlies. If Miles plays two games for Memphis and he will, the Blazers will have to include Miles salary to their cap which will slow down their rapid rise and prevent them from signing certain players.
12 (10) Pistons 22-13
Allen Iverson returned to Denver and led the Pistons to a 93-90 win over his old team. After going 11-11 in the first 22 games after trading for Iverson, the Pistons seem to have made the adjustment by winning 7 out of their last 8 games.
13 (7) Hawks 22-14
The Hawks players sincerely felt that even if the Cavs and Celts were a step above them, at least the Magic were on their level. I for one also shared that sentiment until last week. The Magic beat the Hawks in Atlanta, but followed up with a 121-87 blowout of the Hawks in Orlando. At one point, the Hawks were down 50 points in that game. Add insult to injury, the Hawks Al Hartford was injured in that game and will be out for at least a week. An 0-3 week was the result of all the adversity in Hawks land.
14 (12) Mavericks 22-15
Shaq has come back to haunt the Mavericks all over again. A 25 points, 10 rebounds performance against Eric Dampier, his old nemesis was evident of that. The Mavs started the week with two wins, but ended it with two straight losses to the Suns and the Sacramento Kings.
15 (11) Heat 19-17
The Heat had a miserable 1-3 week with their lone loss coming against the Kings in Sacramento. They even needed overtime to win that game. With his team losing, D-Wade chances of winning the MVP award has dropped from second to fifth place. He still leads the league in scoring with 29ppg.
16 (16) Bucks 18-21
The Bucks went 2-2 in week 11 and should have an upside when center Bogut returns from an injury. They have battle injuries all season and are anticipating their team to be at full strength very soon. Over their last 5 games Charlie Villanueva has been very impressive averaging 19.4ppg. The Bucks could be very interesting if they could get him to play consistently.
17 (17) Nets 18-19
Just when you were rooting for the Nets point guard Devin Harris to make the all-star team, a hammy injury may have put a dent in his armor. Now the Nets Yi is also expected to be out for a month with a recent pinkie injury. I am expecting a downward spiral until both players return to the Nets lineup.
18 (23) 76ers 17-20
Entering week 11, I realize that the 76ers were winning .391 with Brand and .400 without him. After going a perfect 4-0 in week 11, it seems they may be better without him. The Sixers are more of an up tempo that thrives on running the break. Brand slows them down by clogging the middle.
19 (20) Bobcats 14-24
A 2-2 week was decent for a team like the Bobcats, but an overtime win over the slumping Celtics was the highlight. The Bobcats are gauging trade scenarios and I am sure they will make at least one trade before the trade deadline.
20 (18) Raptors 16-22
Nobody is going to trade for Jermaine O’Neal, not when he is due a whopping $23 million next season not to menton $21 million for this season. The Raptors must duplicate what the Phoenix Suns did. Use O’Neal more on offense, similarly to what the Suns did with their O’Neal. It’s that simple and maybe their only choice.
21 (22) Bulls 16-21
As expected, the Bulls are trying to trade Larry Hughes, but unfortunately for them nobody wants Hughes. Ben Gordon is doing his best to keep them competitive with his team leading 21ppg, which should definitely assure him a nice contract extension when he becomes a free agent in the summer.

Kevin McHale drafted and traded Brandon Roy to the Blazers for Randy Foye. So far the Blazers have gotten the better of the trade and Foye simply hasn’t measured up. All that changed when McHale took over as the head coach. Over the last games all wins, Foye averaged 20.8ppg making 50 percent of his shots. I guess he’s playing his heart out, for the man who traded all-star Brandon Roy for him.
23 (21) Pacers 13-24
Mike Dunleavy returned to the lineup for the first time all season. The impact of his return means, Danny Granger will have another weapon spreading the floor which should allow him to score even easier. For the season, Granger is averaging 26.4ppg and will definitely make the Eastern Conference All-Star team this year.
24 (19) Knicks 13-22
Mike D’Antoni and his New York Knick are an exciting team with their super up tempo style of play. Because they are in the Eastern Conference, I expect them to stay in the playoff race. Maybe they’ll make it as the eighth seed, or maybe they’ll fall short by a hair.
25 (26) Warriors 11-28
The Warriors were not a good team to begin with. Add in all the injuries and their record is indicative of where they should be. Monte Ellis is expected to return soon and along with Jax will play spoiler by beating a few good teams. Too bad they are not in the East, because they would actually make the playoffs by season’s end.
26 (24) Grizzlies 11-26
I commend the Grizzlies for a move that actually benefits them in more ways than not. They figured they will have a very high draft pick, which could be packaged with a player for perhaps a Carlos Boozer or someone of that magnitude. Rookies O.J. Mayo and Gasol will be one year better and so will Rudy Gay. Portland will have to make do with what they have, which in my opinion will almost put the Grizzlies on the same level. So signing Miles was a brilliant move on their part.
27 (28) Kings 9-29
Kevin Martin is back and putting up chunky numbers like I expected him to. Martin is averaging 31.8ppg while making 48.9 percent of his shots over the last 5 games. The Kings were 1-4 during the stretch, but Martin has been the one bright spot. I think if he stays healthy, he could lead the league in scoring this season.
28 (30) Thunder 6-32
Nenad Krstic was an excellent pickup for the Thunder. They were 2-2 in week 11 and their upside looks very promising. I don’t expect them to move up this season, but with their high draft pick and an improve core from this season, you can expect the Thunder to rise rather quickly by next season.
29 (27) Wizards 7-29
Gilbert Arenas will not be returning this season, but I am still disappointed with the Wizards record. With two previous all-stars, I expected a much better record even with Arenas out. The one positive is the Wizards will have a top 5 draft pick and Gilbert Arenas returning to the Roster next season.
30 (29) Clippers 8-29
I definitely expect the Clippers to trade Chris Kaman and rumor has it Cleveland will be his destination. The Clippers are anticipating a high draft pick and a healthy Baron Davis for next season. Also, a good enough cap space will be created by trading Chris Kaman, which should allow them to sign a very good player during the summer.
1 (2) Cavaliers 29-6
For the first time this season, the top rank team in the nba is not the Lakers or Celtics. The Cavaliers earned the number one rank by handily beaten the Celtics in Cleveland 98-83. Lebron strengthen his position as the league top candidate for the MVP Award with 38 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assist, 4 steals and 3 blocks. He shut down the Celtics Paul Pierce by holding him to 11 points in the game.
2 (1) Lakers 30-6
Yes, I know the Lakers have the best record in basketball, but they had to really struggle down the stretch at home to beat the Heat and the Pacers. The Lakers may play defense in spurts, but if they expect to win the nba championship, they must be more consistent on that end of the court.
3 (4) Magic 30-8
The Magic have been steady all season long. They showed some maturity on the road edging the Spurs in San Antonio 105-98. I expect Magic point guard Jameer Nelson to be selected as a reserve for this year’s all-star team. He has been the catalyst in directing the Magic offense this season.
4 (3) Celtics 30-9
I wouldn’t say the Celtics have lost their confidence, but I will say they are a very shaky team right about now. After losing three straight, the Celtics were hoping to get back on track against the Cavs in Cleveland, but were clearly out played. The Celtics are 2-7 after a 27-2 start and are really soul searching right now.
5 (5) Spurs 24-12
The Spurs seem to have accepted playing second fiddle to the Lakers for the entire season. Needless to say, they are the second best team in the Western Conference and still, nobody is talking about them.
6 (6) Hornets 22-11
The Hornets began the week with a very impressive 116-105 win against the Lakers in L.A. They followed their impressive win with a stinker against the Jazz in Utah and loss 116-90. Chris Paul dominated Deron Williams in the battle of the point guards, but it was not enough for the win. The Hornets ended the week with another impressive win by blowing out the Clippers 107-80 to maintain their sixth rank from the week before.
7 (8) Nuggets 25-13
Even with Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets leading scorer out for a month, they still have been competitive and posted a 2-1 week. Their lone loss came against the Pistons in Denver in a very close game, 93-90. Anthony is expected to be out for at least two to three more weeks.
8 (9) Suns 21-13
Entering the season, the Suns Amare Stoudemire was anticipating leading the league in scoring. He figured Shaq would be his sidekick. Well, just the opposite has happened. I predicted that for the Suns to be successful, Shaq would have to be more dominant than he was before leaving the Heat. At 17.4ppg and 9rpg, it is fair to say Shaq has not disappointed.
9 (14) Rockets 24-15
I don’t know how they keep doing it, but the Rockets having been finding ways to win when they need to. A 3-1 week and the return of Tracy McGrady have the Rockets being very optimistic as of late.
10 (15) Jazz 22-15
Carlos Boozer was quoted saying he would test the free agent market at the end of the season. I don’t expect the Jazz to let him walk, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see them trade him before the trade deadline, when he returns from his injury. Reason: Paul Millsap, Boozer’s replacement averaged 18.33ppg and 11.66rpg in 3 wins in week 11. He’s been averaging similar numbers since entering the starting lineup. The Jazz believes with minutes he will make up for Boozer, not to mention he is a better defender than Boozer, a staple that Jazz coach Jerry Sloan craves.
11 (13) Trail Blazers 22-15
The Blazers attempted to scare teams by sending out emails to the rest of the league, warning them that the signing of Darius Miles would lead to a law suit. Sorry, but the threats were ignored by the Memphis Grizzlies. If Miles plays two games for Memphis and he will, the Blazers will have to include Miles salary to their cap which will slow down their rapid rise and prevent them from signing certain players.
12 (10) Pistons 22-13
Allen Iverson returned to Denver and led the Pistons to a 93-90 win over his old team. After going 11-11 in the first 22 games after trading for Iverson, the Pistons seem to have made the adjustment by winning 7 out of their last 8 games.
13 (7) Hawks 22-14
The Hawks players sincerely felt that even if the Cavs and Celts were a step above them, at least the Magic were on their level. I for one also shared that sentiment until last week. The Magic beat the Hawks in Atlanta, but followed up with a 121-87 blowout of the Hawks in Orlando. At one point, the Hawks were down 50 points in that game. Add insult to injury, the Hawks Al Hartford was injured in that game and will be out for at least a week. An 0-3 week was the result of all the adversity in Hawks land.
14 (12) Mavericks 22-15
Shaq has come back to haunt the Mavericks all over again. A 25 points, 10 rebounds performance against Eric Dampier, his old nemesis was evident of that. The Mavs started the week with two wins, but ended it with two straight losses to the Suns and the Sacramento Kings.
15 (11) Heat 19-17
The Heat had a miserable 1-3 week with their lone loss coming against the Kings in Sacramento. They even needed overtime to win that game. With his team losing, D-Wade chances of winning the MVP award has dropped from second to fifth place. He still leads the league in scoring with 29ppg.
16 (16) Bucks 18-21
The Bucks went 2-2 in week 11 and should have an upside when center Bogut returns from an injury. They have battle injuries all season and are anticipating their team to be at full strength very soon. Over their last 5 games Charlie Villanueva has been very impressive averaging 19.4ppg. The Bucks could be very interesting if they could get him to play consistently.
17 (17) Nets 18-19
Just when you were rooting for the Nets point guard Devin Harris to make the all-star team, a hammy injury may have put a dent in his armor. Now the Nets Yi is also expected to be out for a month with a recent pinkie injury. I am expecting a downward spiral until both players return to the Nets lineup.
18 (23) 76ers 17-20
Entering week 11, I realize that the 76ers were winning .391 with Brand and .400 without him. After going a perfect 4-0 in week 11, it seems they may be better without him. The Sixers are more of an up tempo that thrives on running the break. Brand slows them down by clogging the middle.
19 (20) Bobcats 14-24
A 2-2 week was decent for a team like the Bobcats, but an overtime win over the slumping Celtics was the highlight. The Bobcats are gauging trade scenarios and I am sure they will make at least one trade before the trade deadline.
20 (18) Raptors 16-22
Nobody is going to trade for Jermaine O’Neal, not when he is due a whopping $23 million next season not to menton $21 million for this season. The Raptors must duplicate what the Phoenix Suns did. Use O’Neal more on offense, similarly to what the Suns did with their O’Neal. It’s that simple and maybe their only choice.
21 (22) Bulls 16-21
As expected, the Bulls are trying to trade Larry Hughes, but unfortunately for them nobody wants Hughes. Ben Gordon is doing his best to keep them competitive with his team leading 21ppg, which should definitely assure him a nice contract extension when he becomes a free agent in the summer.
22 (25) Timberwolves 11-25

NBA WIZARD 2008-09 POWER RANKING: WEEK 10

1 (1) Lakers 27-5
The Lakers maintained their number 1 ranking for a second straight week. They also have the league’s best record to cap things off as well.
2 (2) Cavaliers 27-6
The Cavaliers will be without Big Z for a month due to an ankle injury. A subpar 1-2 week shouldn’t raise any eyebrows yet, but by the end of their West Coast trip coming up, we will be able to really gauge how good the Cavaliers are. With Big Z out, Lebron will have to return to his early season form for the Cavaliers to have any chance of gaining ground on Boston and L.A
3 (3) Celtics 29-6
The Boston Celtics are finally feeling the effects of losing P.J. Brown and James Posey. Like I said before, their nba all time best 27-2 was deceiving because everything had gone perfect. Since then, the Celtics have gone 2-4 and are hoping to obtain the erratic Stephon Maubury if he is released by the Knicks.
4 (4) Magic 26-8
The Magic had a subpar 2-2 week but are still sitting pretty with a 26-8 overall record. Highlights: Dwight Howard is the leading vote getter in the Eastern Conference recent all-star balloting results, thanks to his league leading 13.7 rebounds and 3.63 blocks per game.
5 (5) Spurs 22-11
A 100-98 loss to the Bucks cost the Spurs a perfect 3-0 week. Obviously they are back to being one of the elite teams in the West but, I still think they are a giant step behind the Lakers. They are in that second tier in the Western Conference along with the Nuggets, Hornets and a healthy Houston Rockets.
6 (8) Hornets 20-10
Chris Paul is leading the nba in assist and steals for a second straight season and has the Hornets playing well again after a subpar 5-5 start. They are 15-5 since and went 2-1 in week 10.
7 (6) Hawks 22-11
Last season the Hawks were satisfied with just making the playoffs. This season, they have their sights on making it to the second round of the playoffs with a possible upset of either the Cavaliers or Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. The later may be a though feat and almost impossible if you ask me.
8 (7) Nuggets 23-12
How good are the Nuggets, is the question I keep asking? On paper, they seem like the second best team in the West, but I believe they will end up with the 4th or 5th seed in the West. They are ranked 8th after a 3-1 record in week 10.
9 (11) Suns 19-12
Over his last 5 games, the Suns Shaq turned the clock all the way back by averaging 22.2ppg, 11rpg and 2.4bpg. A heartbreaking 91-90 loss to the Spurs kept the Suns from going 5-0, but they still ended up going 4-1.

The Pistons had a 4-0 week but three of their games were at home. Their only road win came against the Clippers, one of the worse teams in the league and they barely won 88-87. After going 11-11 since the Iverson trade, the Pistons have reeled of seven straight wins. Maybe they have turned the corner after all.

The Heat defense has been their biggest improvement under new head coach Eric Spoelstra. Add in D-Wade’s MVP play and you see how the Heat were able to play the Cavs close in Cleveland and beat them in Miami. Regardless of how well they perform, I expect them to finish with the 6th or 7th seed in the East by the end of the season.

Decent record, 2-1 week with a 20-13 overall record means the Mavericks are a playoff team if the season ended today. Outside of that, I don’t expect them to finish better than the 6th seed in the West.

The Rockets injury situation is really concerning me. Many experts believe that when healthy, the Rockets are the second best team in the West. Will they ever be completely healthy, is the question?
15 (15) Jazz 19-15
Boozer is schedule to return in a month and the Jazz are currently out of the playoffs. Deron Williams is doing his best to keep his team afloat and if the Rockets don’t get it together they could soon find themselves in the Jazz position.

After starting 9-15 with the Bucks have gone 7-4 since. The impressive thing was their 7 wins were by a combined 131 points, an average margin of 18.714. They have literally been blowing teams out while playing excellent defense.
17 (16) Nets 16-18
The Nets went 1-3 in week 10 and have been slumping as of late. The Nets started off terribly going 2-5 in their first 7 games but went on to win 7 of their next 9 giving them a 9-7 overall record. Since then they’ve gone 7-12 and their 16-18 overall record is even better than what I expected them to have after 34 games.
18 (22) Raptors 14-20
I wouldn’t say the Raptors have turned the season around, but after starting the season 10-16 the Raptors are playing .500 ball since and have gone 4-4 over their last eight games.
19 (25) Knicks 13-19
The Knicks 2-2 week was highlighted by their win over the slumping Boston Celtics. The on again, off again Al Harrington has been on again recently with a 22ppg average in week 10.
20 (20) Bobcats 12-22
I would say the Bobcats are better since making the trade for Diaw and Bell. Before the trade, the Bobcats were 7-16 and 5-6 since.
21 (24) Pacers 12-21
The Pacers went 2-1 in week 10 but their overall record is very deceiving. They have lose more close games than any team in the league and should easily be a .500 team. The team’s leading scorer Danny Granger (25.2ppg) will definitely be a first time all-star this year.
22 (18) Bulls 14-20
I think people need to hold on instead of crowning Derrick Rose the NBA ROY when we haven’t even reached half way mark of the season. I think it’s clearly between him and Mayo as of right now, but a 1-3 week and a 14-20 overall record isn’t enough for me to join that band wagon.
23 (19) 76ers 13-20
Before Elton Brand injury the 76ers were 9-14 (.391). Without Brand in the lineup 4-6 (.40). They may be just as good or bad for that matter without Brand. The only problem is, he is due $75 million over the next 5 years including this one.
24 (23) Grizzlies 13-20
With both the Grizz and the Bulls having losing records, the only measurement used for determining the NBA ROY Award should be individual stats and so far I like O.J. Mayo better. A 1-3 week didn’t help his cause.
25 (27) Timberwolves 8-25
I guess Kevin McHale can actually coach after all. The Timberwolves may have won against 3 teams with losing records, but a 3-1 week was still impressive in my book. Let’s see if they can build on it in the upcoming weeks.
26 (21) Warriors 10-25
I don’t understand why Nellie doesn’t play Anthony Morrow a little more. The guy is averaging almost 10ppg in less than 20 minutes. I know Nellie is supposed to be a genius, but am I the only one who sees his potential? I can understand if the Warriors were healthy or at the very least a playoff team.
27 (29) Wizards 7-25
The Wizards could have been the first team in the nba to do two things this season. Be the first team to beat the Cavs in Cleveland, they were up by 7 points with less than two minutes in the game, but found a way to lose. They made up and beat the Cavs in their next meeting in Washington and had to beaten the Cavs earlier, would have been the only team to beat Cleveland twice thus far this season.
28 (28) Kings 8-26
Kevin Martin may have one of the ugliest jumpers in the nba, but there is no disputing that he is a natural born scorer. He averaged 28.3ppg in week 10 after just returning from an injury. He should make the Kings very exciting and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up leading the league in scoring.
29 (26) Clippers 8-25
The Clippers signed Baron Davis because they were sure he would team up with forward Elton Brand who bolted for the 76ers. Now there’s talk Davis wants to return back to the Warriors now that he’s got his new contract. Things are just a big mess in Clipperland.
30 (30) Thunder 4-30
The Thunder appears to be the team that will end up with the nba’s worse record unless some drastic changes are made via a trade. Obviously they already fired one coach so I think new head coach Scotty Brooks job is safe at least until the end of the season.

The Pacers went 2-1 in week 10 but their overall record is very deceiving. They have lose more close games than any team in the league and should easily be a .500 team. The team’s leading scorer Danny Granger (25.2ppg) will definitely be a first time all-star this year.
22 (18) Bulls 14-20
I think people need to hold on instead of crowning Derrick Rose the NBA ROY when we haven’t even reached half way mark of the season. I think it’s clearly between him and Mayo as of right now, but a 1-3 week and a 14-20 overall record isn’t enough for me to join that band wagon.
23 (19) 76ers 13-20
Before Elton Brand injury the 76ers were 9-14 (.391). Without Brand in the lineup 4-6 (.40). They may be just as good or bad for that matter without Brand. The only problem is, he is due $75 million over the next 5 years including this one.
24 (23) Grizzlies 13-20
With both the Grizz and the Bulls having losing records, the only measurement used for determining the NBA ROY Award should be individual stats and so far I like O.J. Mayo better. A 1-3 week didn’t help his cause.
25 (27) Timberwolves 8-25
I guess Kevin McHale can actually coach after all. The Timberwolves may have won against 3 teams with losing records, but a 3-1 week was still impressive in my book. Let’s see if they can build on it in the upcoming weeks.
26 (21) Warriors 10-25
I don’t understand why Nellie doesn’t play Anthony Morrow a little more. The guy is averaging almost 10ppg in less than 20 minutes. I know Nellie is supposed to be a genius, but am I the only one who sees his potential? I can understand if the Warriors were healthy or at the very least a playoff team.
27 (29) Wizards 7-25
The Wizards could have been the first team in the nba to do two things this season. Be the first team to beat the Cavs in Cleveland, they were up by 7 points with less than two minutes in the game, but found a way to lose. They made up and beat the Cavs in their next meeting in Washington and had to beaten the Cavs earlier, would have been the only team to beat Cleveland twice thus far this season.
28 (28) Kings 8-26
Kevin Martin may have one of the ugliest jumpers in the nba, but there is no disputing that he is a natural born scorer. He averaged 28.3ppg in week 10 after just returning from an injury. He should make the Kings very exciting and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up leading the league in scoring.
29 (26) Clippers 8-25
The Clippers signed Baron Davis because they were sure he would team up with forward Elton Brand who bolted for the 76ers. Now there’s talk Davis wants to return back to the Warriors now that he’s got his new contract. Things are just a big mess in Clipperland.
30 (30) Thunder 4-30
The Thunder appears to be the team that will end up with the nba’s worse record unless some drastic changes are made via a trade. Obviously they already fired one coach so I think new head coach Scotty Brooks job is safe at least until the end of the season.
